Adirondack native Melissa Kline recently founded Maple Lane Design and Drafting, LLC a company that specializes in architectural design and drafting services for residential and small commercial projects.

Melissa worked with a local architect for 13 years and designed plans for many properties located in the Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, and Lake Placid region. In 2013, she decided it was time to start her own venture to capitalize on the growing demand from homeowners and small construction firms wanting to work directly with an independent designer.

She contacted the North Country Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for guidance on how to start a new business. She met with business advisor, Angela Smith, who helped her test the feasibility of her idea as well as answer many questions about choosing a legal business entity, tax requirements and recordkeeping.

Melissa officially opened Maple Lane Design & Drafting, LLC in May 2013 and to date she has completed projects with area engineers, builders and homeowners. In spite of her busy schedule, she took the time to volunteer her design services for the “New York Says Thank You - Big Build 2013”, a foundation that helps rebuild homes of first responders and police officers who lost their residences due to Hurricane Sandy.

Maple Lane Design uses the latest CAD software and has working relationships with local engineers and architects for larger projects. ro learn more about Melissa and her company by follow Maple Lane Design & Drafting, LLC on Facebook.

“The SBDC has helped me build the confidence I needed to start my own business by providing free one-on-one support, practical workshops covering multiple subjects that are critical in the start-up phase and after. Thank you so much Angela and the SBDC!”
